Satchmo Café

Satchmo Café

Satchmo is unfailingly cool, just like jazz.

Jewish cuisine and jazz are a match made in heaven, and you can get both at Satchmo Cafe. During the daytime, the mismatched vintage-style furnishings of Satchmo café provides a nice backdrop for food and beverages; by night, walk over to this quiet Fitzgerald Street favorite and sip cocktails to the music of live jazz.

Traditional Jewish fare is available on the menu, including delicatessen charcuterie boards, bowls of hearty home-style chicken soup, a variety of bagels, and delicious chicken blintz (crepes filled with chicken, celery, and carrot, served with asparagus spears).

An occasion for the whole family

In 2015, the project began. By Nathan and Benedikte Karnovsky, a mother-son duo dedicated to introducing the New Orleans cafe concept to Perth. With a seasonal menu that pays homage to the family’s traditional Jewish background as well as their passion for New Orleans cuisine and music.

Satchmo is named after Louis Armstrong, the great trumpet player who was raised by a Karnovsky who nourished and inspired his musical skill.

Drink some loose leaf tea, coffee, or a cocktail with your meal. Satchmo does the cafe/bar hybrid better than anybody else in North Perth, so book a table, come on over, and see what all the hype is about for yourself.

Who doesn’t want some wonderful bagels? Satchmo Cafe in North Perth has perfected the classic bagel, which is a good thing! They are also experts in steacon. You’re not sure what that is, are you? It’s bacon…in the form of a steak. That’s right, a bacon slice that’s extra thick. Their menu items can also be served on gluten-free bread.

Yes! This stunning cafe’s all-wooden, airy atmosphere, combined with the incredibly cool jazz music, makes it the ideal setting for an all-day breakfast.

Karnofsky’s favorites, mamma’s matzo ball chicken soup, and blueberry-cheese blintzes with caramelized banana are among the items on the menu. The bagel menu (of course, courtesy of Holy Bagels) has everything you could want, including corned beef with pickle and mustard aioli.

The pleasantly eccentric cafe was developed by Nathan Karnovsky (co-founder of The Holy Bagel Co) and features excellent coffee, New York deli-style food, and vinyl records for sale.

Karnovsky is in charge of the coffee machine, and he knows what he’s doing because he’s been in the industry for a long time, notably at The Grumpy Sailor in Fremantle. He’ll happily talk music with other vinyl collectors (he’s been collecting for a long time), and there’s always vintage music playing in the background.

Karnovsky’s mother deserves praise for baking the delectable delicacies, which include pumpkin-rum-raisin bread with maple butter, peanut choc cookies, and a variety of cakes, including gluten-free options.

As jazz fans know, Louis Armstrong’s nickname was “Satchmo,” and Karnovsky shares a fascinating family link with him. When Armstrong was a young lad, the Karnofskys of New Orleans took him under their wing and helped him realize his musical dreams.
